HPQ CEO Discusses GEN4 21700 cells surpassing 6,600 mAh and What Comes Next

In a recent interview, HPQ CEO Bernard Tourillon discussed the Company’s latest battery milestone and what it means commercially.

The conversation centered on HPQ’s newly announced GEN4 21700 battery cell results, which delivered an average capacity above 6,600 mAh and a record cell at 6,696 mAh, placing HPQ and Novacium among a small group of developers globally operating at this level in the 21700 format.

Tourillon explained that the significance goes beyond the number itself. These were not one-off lab samples, but pre-commercial 21700 cells assembled by HPQ’s commercial subcontractor using Novacium’s GEN4 silicon-based anode material. He also outlined why HPQ is now focusing more heavily on the 21700 format, noting that customer demand has shifted toward higher-capacity cylindrical cells for specialized, high-value applications.

The interview also covered HPQ’s commercialization strategy. Rather than chasing broad volume markets immediately, the Company is targeting niche sectors where longer runtime and higher energy density command stronger margins, including military radios, long-endurance drones, communications equipment, and portable power systems. Tourillon emphasized that HPQ is already in discussions with potential partners and customers, and that the pathway to revenue is becoming clearer.

The conversation also touched on the Canadian federal grant of up to $3 million to support the buildout of HPQ’s first battery production facility in Canada. Tourillon confirmed that the program is on track, that funds have already begun to be deployed, and that the initiative supports HPQ’s broader strategy to establish a domestic battery capability around a high-performance, non-Asian anode material platform.

By watching the interview, you’ll gain:
How HPQ’s 6,696 mAh GEN4 result fits into the global 21700 battery landscape. Why the Company shifted from 18650 to 21700 cells based on direct market demand. How HPQ plans to commercialize through high-margin niche applications before broader scale-up. Why the federal grant matters to HPQ’s first Canadian battery production facility and long-term revenue visibility.
